A new RFID infrastructure under way in Norwegian grocery trade

30 November 2010 10:33

Norsk Lastbærer Pool (NLP) has awarded Lexit Group, Telenor Objects and Hrafn a contract for delivery of an infrastructure to read and register NLP’s RFID tagged plastic pallets.

The company NLP was started in 2006 and is owned by producers and wholesalers in the Norwegian grocery trade. NLP organises and runs a return settlement system for wood pallets, plastic pallets and plastic crates between parties in the grocery trade industry.

The industry is currently replacing the wooden pallet with a more robust plastic pallet equipped with an electronic identifier. Four RFID tags with a unique identifier is built into each corner of the pallet. NLP will use the identifier to control the flow of pallets through its own value chain.

NLP also wants to allow partners in the industry to use the RFID infrastructure to improve their own internal value chains in a secure and efficient manner. The network effects from such an implementation are estimated to be significant for the entire food industry.

A complete version of the press release (in Norwegian) is available here.
